This is the story of my best friend, Hannah Helen Hasslen.
During the summer of 2010, Hannah came down with what was thought to be a stomach virus. She had a fever, was throwing up, and had serve pain in her abdomen. After a few months of treatment, her condition had not improved, in fact, it had greatly deteriorated. After a severe bout of pain, her parents rushed her to the Emergency Room. There they conducted multiple tests and to everyone’s horror, they found that Hannah had a rare and very aggressive type of liver cancer.
She was admitted into the local children’s hospital soon after. After multiple chemotherapy treatments, she began to improve in the slightest ways. One day Hannah’s mom remarked that the PulseOX red light reminded her of ET. Hannah didn’t know what ET was because she had never seen the movie. Later that night her mom awoke to the sound of soft singing. Hannah was laying on her side looking at the PulseOX on her finger and was singing “This Little Light of Mine”. Hannah’s mom decided that Hannah’s idea was much better than ET.
Then Hannah’s health took a sharp turn for the worst.
On the 1st of November, 2010, my sweet friend lost her fight. She would have been 9 on the 1st of December, 2010. She died from her liver rupturing.
Though she lost her fight I will always consider my friend a fighter. Through the pain, her eyes would sparkle and she could make even the grumpiest person laugh. She was such a fear and special friend. She looked at life like no one had ever before. I just wanted to share this so that Hannah won’t be forgotten.
