My little girl is beating the odds with a very aggressive form of pineoblastoma (big bad brain cancer). They got it out with surgery and we wait, preventative chemo stopped due to her reactions to the supportive therapies (including platelets). The doctors say that she will have a recurrence in her spine in 3 months and it will be fatal. We are now 7 months post surgery and I believe so strongly that we are working with faith, love and spirit to do what medicine can’t at this point.
Little Ruby is now 8 years old. I call it the infinity year. She is an infinite spirit, a dancer, singer, painter, story teller, avid reader and a hilarious gentle trickster.
Her brother Holling is now 4 and after these 7 months of living away from home (we live 2200 miles from where we had to go for treatment) we are glad to be back in the Canadian North where we live in a tiny wonderful town called Haines Junction. There are no guarantees in life. Only love. And the moment we have to give it.
We heard Jamie Grace’s song “Beautiful Day” when we were in Edmonton seeking alternative treatments for preventing this cancer from coming back. This song was playing on a station when Ruby and I were in the car together. We stayed on that station till it came on again the next day and we were singing all the words with fantastic abandon.
All I know for sure is that my Ruby is love.
