My name is Laken.
I was raised in church and spent years never experiencing anything terribly bad. But then, I found Izzy (pictured). Izzy was a sweet, young girl who had cancer. She developed it when she was three or four and it was in her leg. They were forced to amputate it for her sake. We thought that everything was okay, but then cancer returned in a different part of her body. Through the whole process, she prayed and prayed and kept her head up, saying, “If I be sad or mad, the devil will be happy. So I’m gonna keep smilin’!”
Izzy was the bravest, sweetest little fighter.
She went to heaven on February 22nd, 2012.
On March 12, 2012, Izzy’s birthday, I was at school when a girl named Maddy passed out. She was the most beautiful, popular girl in our grade, and was nice to everyone. She was 4 of my friends’ best friend. I remember telling one of them, Emily, when she passed out that everything would be okay and it was simply her heart disorder (she had a murmur), but she’d be back up and running in no time. I was wrong.
About an hour later, it was announced that she had passed away.
I was completely shattered and broken, along with several other students. I was distraught and irate for months, but God pulled me through it. Then, I discovered recently that my best friend’s brother, who is a very close friend of mine, developed Crohn’s.
He is a fighter.
Izzy was a fighter.
Maddy was a fighters.
And now, I’m a fighter.
